Late Night Snacking: The Results

This post is brought to you by our sponsor, “Always Eat After 7 PM”. The opinions expressed below are my own.

Two weeks ago I shared my goals with the ‘Always Eat After 7 PM’ program, a diet program that encourages late night snacking. In case you missed it, read the full post here. My main goals with this book were to increase my energy levels and boost metabolism. (I have three young kids, work full time, and run a travel blog, so I could use all the help I can get!)

During the Coronavirus pandemic, I was fortunate enough to continue working, however my hours were reduced from 8-3 PM to 1130-4 PM. This actually was a blessing because I got to ‘sleep in’ past 6 AM each morning and catch up on some much needed rest. But, now that our region is starting to open back up, my hours have returned to normal. In fact, last week was my first full week. So, how am I doing??

To my surprise, I feel great!

What foods should you eat before bed?

From reading the book I learned, “Specific higher-carbohydrate foods (including berries and cherries) support your fat-burning metabolism while you sleep, providing your body with a steady stream of fuel throughout the night. The trick is knowing how to combine them with other evening and pre-bedtime fat-burning foods to fuel your metabolism as you sleep.”

By eating these ‘super carbs’ before bed, I now feel energized as I power through my early morning workouts, cruise through the work day, and even have the energy to play with the kids when I get home!

And since night time hunger was always my nemesis, I’m loving all of the delicious and satisfying meal ideas. With the food lists and easy-to-follow recipes, planning out my meals for the week is a breeze. As for my newest favorite late-night healthy snack? Hands down these flavorful and filing fruit tarts (shown below) hit the spot!

My Results + Why Most Diets Fail

In the past, I’ve always deprived myself from eating late at night. Then come the morning, I’d feel sluggish or even lightheaded while attempting exercise; I used to rely on coffee or even cat naps at lunch to help me get through the workday. And energy to play with my kids? Forget it. I’d struggle to stay awake for dinner and baths.

But I guess I wasn’t alone. Per Joel, the “Fact is, most diets are extremely narrow with regard to food choices and variety, and many even limit entire macronutrients altogether over the course of the entire program (think low-carb and low-fat diets). Three months with no carbs? No thanks. Such practices not only are entirely unnecessary, but make for a miserable, unsustainable experience.”

Don’t live a life in misery, depriving yourself of vital building blocks. Instead, nourish your body! I challenge you, next week for the whole week try eating a late-night snack high in both protein and carbs before bed and see how you feel! I have a hunch you’ll wake recharged, refueled, and ready to tackle the day.
